Women to Watch in 2011: 12 Moms in Business

January/6/2011

With media outlets and authors chatting away about women and moms in business, Mommy Perks would like to toss our hat into that ring. We know all about women and mothers in business – it’s our Business to know, in fact!

Mommy Perks was founded back in 2005. Since buying the company in 2009 I’ve worked with countless women, mothers and business owners. Simply getting yourself on TV or into a magazine doesn’t necessarily equate to “great business” or “quality products” or “someone going places.” In the same sense, just because a business hasn’t been seen on TV or inside magazines doesn’t make them less valuable, helpful, useful or special.

Of the 12 moms in business that I chose to highlight here, the Criteria I used is as follows:

  1. Each one is a mother
  2. Each one began their business based on a need they saw in the market or with their own child(ren)
  3. Each one is hard working, driven and focused
  4. Each one feels a deep passion for what they do/sell/offer/promote
  5. Each one embraces a strong drive for entrepreneurship and ethical business practices

Here’s the Mommy Perks Women to Watch in 2011 list:*

AbcTeach.com

Sandy, founder/owner of AbcTeach.com, began her business long before other teacher/educator sites were up and running. This year, she celebrates her tenth year in business. With a background in education, Sandy combined her many years or experience and knowledge – putting together a website that would assist educators, home schools, parents, teachers, librarians, nannies and more. With over 40,000 site members,Sandy has established herself as a go-to location for educators around the world.

Crafty Baby

From the age of nine, Jill’s grandmother began teaching her to sew. After having children Jill found herself frustrated by the lack of quality toys. So many toys were available on the market but many of them fell apart quickly, broke, snapped in two, etc. Jill set out to create lasting and durable Clutch Balls, Nap Packs, Bibs, Blankets, Changing Pads, Nappies, Pillows and now…Art Smocks. Jill offers single sales, bulk orders for licensed preschools and day-cares and wholesale options.

Find Me Book

Kinzie has a background in education and special needs. One day, while in her garage, she saw her kids hiding behind the shelving – just their faces showing through. “Ah, hah!” Not long after she created her search-and-find personalized books. Each book contains 11 pages, rotating 6 images (people, pets, etc). Her business has been likened to “Where’s Waldo” – only it’s completely personalized and the customer chooses the 11 page images (scenes include holidays, money, marbles, cultural options, cars, food, a messy bedroom and more).

GagaGouGou

After giving birth, Iris decided she wanted to work from home. She enjoyed shopping and seeking out quality baby products. After reviewing numerous items she decided to start a website, selling the products she found to be Top Notch. Combining her love of all things Green, cloth diapering and Canadian, she now runs a site offering boutique-quality maternity and baby products. Her new blog also offers reviews, giveaways and more.

Iris is also in the midst of helping other Canadian work-at-home moms network, chat, promote and build a community Online. You can find out more about that on her facebook page: Canadian WAHM

Freckles Crafts

Many moms and teachers are crafty and can put together their own ideas. However, many are not. Where do the not-so-crafty folks turns for easy use options? They turn to Rebecca! With two boys of her own, Rebecca wanted to create craft kits that could easily be purchased and used at home or in the classroom. No need to come up with your own ideas or do the cutting. Everything is supplied in these kits and no waste is produced. Green – simple – helpful – organized.

Kidlutions

With an extensive background in counseling, training, consulting and Head Start field work, Wendy has created a line of cards that helps to open lines of communication. Wendy knows families – she knows children – she knows the struggles we endure and the obstacles we face. She wants to help parents and children build a deeper understanding of social emotional development, emotional intelligence and really – for people to become kinder, more humanitarian and more empathetic of one another. She has also created an Award, honoring other business owners who strive for the same goals: The Kidlutions Preferred Products Award.

Little Journey’s World

Caroline makes many of her products by hand, focusing on Multicultural concepts. With a Swiss-American heritage, she is greatly interested in unique, cultural and hard-to-find products. She prides herself on workmanship, quality and craftsmanship. From credit card covers and western wear to tote bags, hats and apron, there’s a little something for everyone. The products on Caroline’s site are highly affordable, making them even more of a ‘find.’

You’ll also locate wonderful, cultural recipes on her blog: Little Journey’s World blog.

Peacock Pottery

Having spent two years in Poland, Leah was drawn to the stunning pottery of their people. She began her business about five years ago and did very well…until the economy crumbled. Just before sitting down to close her business, she decided to Google a bit. She stumbled onto the Mommy Perks site, signed up for a little PR and…as Leah put it: “My business is back on the upswing again.” In fact, she recently signed on to become a Wholesaler for her favorite Pottery line – by invite only. She is now one of a handful of Wholesalers in theUSA and will be showing her wares at a largePhoenix show in just a few weeks. I have every faith that Leah will sell her pottery with ease and it will soon be seen in gift shops and collector stores aroundArizona.

Signing Families

After 911, Louise realized just how great the need is for non-speaking people to communicate in emergency situations. She has created two DVD’s (so far) for the hearing and non hearing communities – hoping to better merge the two. You won’t find cartoon characters or cute backgrounds in these DVD’s. They are educationally focused with the intention of giving people the skills needed to communicate: emt’s, nurses, doctors, college professors, instructors, teachers, parents, grandparents, nannies and more.

From DVD’s to charts, everything produced by Louise is personalized and customized. Children are called in for photo shoots, creating the signs needed for the specialty charts and products. Perfect for homes, classrooms, Sunday Schools, day care centers, preschools and more.

Slimy Bookworm

With a great love of books, Bola and her son decided to start up an Online business. They offer quality family-friendly books for ages birth-12. From art and music to culture, religion, fantasy, nature and science, Bola hopes to aid parents and grandparents in their quest for age appropriate literacy.

All books have been reviewed, prior to listing, making this website safe and kid-surf-friendly.

Up to 20% of proceeds are donated to assist literacy efforts in inner city areas both in theUSAand Internationally.

Stella & Dot

Stella & Dot is sold by various Reps around the country. Tracy Bennett is one such Rep. She lives  in Texas with her husband and son and began selling Stella & Dot products in order to help support her family. She has quickly become known by her peers as the go-to gal and a rise-to-the-top woman. Her kind heart and giving spirit have no doubt aided in her ability to sell, gain trust and attain repeat business. Direct Sales is no easy path to take, as many sellers will attest. A reason must be given for choosing one seller over another, with so many people offering the same products across the nation.Tracyhas pushed her way through that mud with class and faith, making her a “Woman to Watch in 2011.”

Womentorz

There are lots of Online directories now, with many of them starting up as long as 13+ years ago. What makes Womentorz different? Melinda, founder, saw a need in the market for female inventors. Where can they congregate? Where can women inventors network, chat, toss ideas and support one another’s efforts? From these questions, and more, Womentorz was born. Melinda’s background assists her in the ability to couch, counsel, support and work through ideas with female inventors. Her connections in media have quickly brought her to the attention of TV stations, radio outlets and authors.
